Thirty miles north of downtown Charleston is the city of Ladson. It may not be the city  that immediately comes to mind when you think about South Carolina Lowcountry but it’s making headlines and here’s why: Mercedes Benz is spending close to $500 million dollars on upgrades to the existing plant in Ladson, SC. On the 200 acres off the Palmetto Commerce Parkway, Mercedes-Benz Vans will create a completely new body shop, a paint shop and an assembly line. In the past, this work was completed overseas and the kits were shipped to the plant for assembly. Construction of the new factory is scheduled to begin in 2016.

What does this mean for the Charleston area?

  • Jobs. The plant is projected to bring close to 1300 new jobs to the area. With new jobs comes new revenues and an increase in consumer buying power. As more money comes into the area, communities can grow and housing developments will continue to see an increase.
  • New residents. While there is a high population of skilled workers, tradespeople and managerial roles in this area already, the draw of new possibilities will bring in workers from all over the East Coast.
  • Influx of new businesses. With more people brings the reality of the needs for more stores, gas stations, medical centers and restaurants and this area has the vacant land and retail centers primed and ready for development.
